Where was the first Post Office opened in India?

Many people do not know where the first post office opened in India.

Indian Post Office History

East India Company established Post offices in India during British Era in the year 1766. Post Offices were started as "Company Mail". 

Lard Dalhousie renamed the company Mail to India Post Office when he was appointed a Post Office commission in the year 1850.

He helped to pass recommendations of the post office commission in the form of the India Post Office Act 1854. After several modifications done in India Post Office Act 1854, the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 was issued in the year 1898.

First Post Office was opened on 31 March 1774  in Calcutta. It is the first post office in India named Calcutta GPO. 

Madras GPO was opened on 01 June 1986.

Bombay GPO was opened in the year 1794. 

Banglore GPO was established in the year 1800.

First Postal Stamp was released in the year 1852 by the Indian Post Office. The first Postal Stamp was released on 21 November 1947 by Independent India.

Right now, Post Offices are working under the Department of Posts, India. It is also known as India Post. The Department of Posts comes under the Ministry of Communication, Government of India. It is the second-largest Central Government Department in India.

A total of 23 postal circles are established across India. Each and every circle is headed by a Head of Circle named Chief Postmaster General. 

Each circle is further divided into Regions, Divisions, Sub Divisions, HO, SO, BO, RMS, etc.

Right now, more than 150000 post offices are working under the Department of Posts.
